Escape velocity

  1. At 11km/s or 6.85 miles/s you can successfully break orbit and escape the gravitational pull of the Earth.

  2. At 10km/s or 6.21 miles/s the Earth will eventually slow down your ascent till you begin falling back towards the ground.

  3. These values are at ground level. Once in orbit the escape velocity is lower than 11km/s.  source

  4. Velocity is the speed and direction of motion of an object.

  5. In other words, velocity is the rate of change of position of an object (where position incorporates direction by specifying whether the object is moving backwards or forwards on a line, or moving sideways or up and down in two or three dimensions). source
