Escape velocity

  1. First - escape means getting away from the earth.

  2. Velocity is a scientific word or term for speed in a named direction.

  3. Which direction is the rocket going?  Up won't do.

  4. At 11km/s or 6.85 miles/s you can successfully break orbit and escape the gravitational pull of the Earth.

  5. 11km/s = metres per second or 6.85 miles/s

  6. Calculate 6.85 miles/s into mph or miles per hour.
  7.
  8. You can use 7 mph to make it easier.

  9. At 10km/s or 6.21 miles/s the Earth will eventually slow down your ascent till you begin falling back towards the ground.

  10. These values are at ground level. Once in orbit the escape velocity is lower than 11km/s.  source

  11. In other words, velocity is the rate of change of position of an object where position includes direction .....
