Huge numbers

Let's look at the title - Astronomy Science.  There is far more science in the children's site than going out at night with telescopes looking for the Northern Star.

There are many outstanding features of astronomy, not least, huge numbers.

How best to help a child appreciate that there billions of

           stars in the universe?

The Milky Way is our galaxy.

We now take material from the children's website.

A galaxy is a huge collection of stars.

The Milky Way galaxy where we live contains 100–400 billion stars and more than 100 billion planets.

What does a billion of anything look like?

Let's look at the bag.  It holds bird seed.

We will look at the detail later.  25 seeds weigh 0.20 gm. Kitchen scale, not laboratory scale.

There are about 12500 seeds in 1 kg.

There are about 250000 in one bag.

There are about 1,000,000 seeds in 4 bags

How many bags to reach 1,000,000,000 ?

Already you are looking at material from the sister to this blog.  It is the website for children 8 - 12.

Every so often, they are asked questions or given a task - green text as you have seen.

Questions such as "How many bags to reach 1,000,000,000 ?" are dealt with on the children's site.  Example
